Network security consists of policies and provisions adopted by a network administrator (for home computer or business) to monitor and prevent unauthorized access or misuse of a computer network. In some companies, the network administrator may also be called a network specialist or network analyst. Network security usually involves providing protection against hackers (internet intruders.) This differs from IT security, which focuses on protecting data resources from Malware attack or mistakes by people within an organization by use of data loss prevention (DLP.)

Network security starts with a username and password. Next, a firewall, which is a set of devices designed to deny network transmissions based on a set of rules, is used to enforces access policies. Most personal computer operating systems include software-based firewalls to protect against public Internet threats. Network security differs, depending on the situation. Most small businesses, or home computer networks, require basic security. Larger businesses will require a higher level of security, while places such as schools and government offices will require even stronger levels of network security.

The following would work for a small home network:
Basic firewall system.

For Windows users, a basic antivirus software package. There are several different types of antivirus programs available for home computers.

Anti-spyware would also be a good investment for home computer.

If you have a wireless connection, a strong password is recommended. Also, try to use the strongest security supported by your wireless devices.

Also for wireless computers: Change the default SSID network name, also disable SSID Broadcast; as this function is unnecessary for home use.

For MAC computers, enable MAC address filtering to keep track of all home network MAC devices.

Use passwords for all accounts.

Disable guest account on your computer.

Discuss internet security and awareness with your children.
